This bit of news popped into my inbox today, and wanted to share it. Hopefully you’ll have the opportunity to come to the Golden state and pay a visit to the Bay Area, and more specifically, the California Grand Lodge.
The curator there kicks butt on a shoe sting budget and a staff of a few (if that many) to put these together, and if this more permanent display is anything like the past display at the Grand Masters conference, then I’m sure it well worth the time.
The Henry Wilson Coil Library & Museum of Freemasonry Presents:
Builders of Dreams: The California Masonic Experience 1850-Present
March 1 to November 10, 2009
The Republic of California, known as the Golden State, has long been a beacon for those seeking the dream of a better life. Settled by Spain, annexed by Mexico, and finally admitted into the United States in 1850, people from far and wide have brought their talents and vigor to make the State one of the largest economies in the world and a symbol for a progressive and tolerant multicultural society.
With the settlement of the Americans, it is impossible to turn a page in California’s history without encountering Freemasons, many of whom set up local governments and established its well-known industries of mining, agriculture, entertainment and the arts. This exhibit is a highlight of the accomplishments, and contains objects that illustrate innovation and invention, art and material culture influenced by Freemasonry or by Freemasons themselves throughout history unto the present day. Freemasonry is not separate from recorded history. It is a special lens by which we may gain a deeper insight into established events.
A special video also highlights many historical events and people of interest, including the San Francisco earthquake & fire, as well as California’s near involvement in the Civil War, and the accomplishments of Thomas Starr-King, Leland Stanford and Earl Warren.
