Those of us who have been in the trenches, involved with the daily operation of a Lodge and interaction with other Lodges and Brethren and with Grand Lodge have our eyes and ears open and we know what is going on. We see who is black balled and who is not. We notice the cultural and racial makeup of our Lodges, the Lodges around us and our Grand Lodge. WE KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON.
For years now I have said that the KKK receded and disappeared into Freemasonry. They went underground with an organization from which they copied the style and manner of their ritual and the private manner of their organization. The KKK and Freemasonry have nothing in common philosophically but organizationally they are similar. So it was easy to just let Freemasonry absorb them.
Now my hypothesis has been challenged by many Northern and Canadian Brethren who also have their eyes and ears open and don’t see it – because it isn’t there in their Lodges. Not experiencing it they just couldn’t believe that it happens. They think that I am missing a few marbles, out to lunch, three french fries short of a Happy Meal. But if so why would the Grand Master of Virginia make this statement?
Most Worshipful Jeffery E. Hodges wrote a letter with the following statement:
“With regard to organizations that are anti-semitic, racist or antisocial in their doctrine and avocation, such as but not limited to, the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, etc., the following will be the policy of the Grand Lodge of Virginia: it is not acceptable to present information on, display association with, or solicit involvement in such organizations in a Masonic Lodge holden under the Grand Lodge of Virginia. At no time, should such organizations be linked to our gentle Craft.”
There is a wonderful post by Brother Shelby L. Chandler on the blog for Gate City Lodge No. 2 which I have reprinted here below. It is worth noting and repeating one important point he made:
“As for that maligned Lodge mentioned above, all Masonic charges have been dropped. However, there is still a grassroots movement by other Lodges in their Grand Jurisdiction to petition to have the Charter of that Lodge removed as punishment for raising a Brother of “non-white” descent.”

We can let ourselves be torn apart by refusing to admit we have a problem. We can bury our heads in the sand, block our eyes, close our ears and just let life go on as it is. Or we can take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them.
Did the GM of VA actually write “anti-semantic” instead of “anti-semitic”, or was that a copy error?
It was a direct copy from Gate City Lodge No. 2. If they change it so will I.
First of all, it is supposed to be, “With regard to organizations that are anti-Semitic” (see above listed website – Page 6).
The reason why the Virginia Grand Master put this letter was in fact, not because the KKK is embedded itself into Freemasonry, especially in Virginia. It was written to ensure that every Virginia Masons individually understands Grand Lodge policy on this issue with regards to external organizational relationships.
Yes, there are Masonic members out there whose negative frame of mind would also advocate being a member of such organizations simultaneously, but that is a far different thing than to say that such hateful groups are dwelling within Masonic Lodges, especially in Virginia.
Frankly Brother, I am a little disheartened by this positioning; in a fashion it is publicly advocating “reverse-discrimination” in that “unsaid jurisdictions” are being accused of clandestine activities, which is suggestive enough to indirectly slander legitimate Grand Lodges that are making a concerted effort on a individual to individual basis to ensure that every one of their members are working to improve their ashlars.
It saddens me that such a controversial position would be taken wantonly and without evidence or clarification from those who wrote the letter, and because of this, the words of my beloved Grand Master have been manipulated to fulfill a specific agenda.
I would have rather seen praises upon this great man; that he would act to impress the finer qualities of the human soul upon every Freemason as individuals, rather than see his letter used to justify this unproven position and as such would leave such a blot upon his name for others to equate with such hatred; his letter was meant to inspire not to justify.

I do not take lightly what I have had to say. But in the Beehive column there was no criticism of the Grand Lodge of Virginia. I have said many times that I think the Grand Lodge of Virginia is an excellent Grand Lodge from all that I have heard.
That being said it is is obvious to anyone who looks closely into the matter that anti Black racism abounds in Mainstream Freemasonry far too frequently for it just to be “a Southern thing.”
Far from being a groundless charge just thrown out there I have done considerable research on the subject. You can read articles I have written on the KKK and racism in Freemasonry in “Masonic Magazine” a few years back.
I have researched Klan rituals. I can offer testimony from well known Masons, especially in Florida where many New York Black Master Mason snowbirds were turned away by two tactics. The Lodge upon seeing a Black Master Mason visitor would refuse to open Lodge but would instead hold a “Masonic Education Night.” Or Lodges would take a secret ballot on whether to admit every visitor. The Black visitors never redceived a favorable ballot. This tactic has spread to other Grand Lodges.
I can personally testify to a number of racist Masonic experiences, one involving a Grand lodge Officer. When I wrote to the Grand Master in question I received no reply.
Then we have the example of West Virgina who expelled a recent Past Grand Master, Frank Haas, for among other things of talking to Prince Hall. This was all legal as the West Virginia Grand Lodge had GL by-laws that made it illegal and punishable by expulsion for any West Virginian Mainstream Mason to talk to any Prince Hall Mason. Now who would go to such great lenghts to codify such a by-law?
And we have the most recent example of the Grand Lodge of Georgia preferring charges by round-a-bout means against a Worshipful Master and Lodge for admitting a Black man. It seems that they have a by-law that prohibits the raising of any non-white. Now I wonder who would codify such a provision?
Their isn’t enough space here to list all the research and evidence that I have obtained. I took the Grand Master of Virginia’s statement to not reflect any wrongs in the Virginia GL but rather as a validation of what I have discovered through experience and research. And I applaud the Grand Master for his candidness.
It wasn’t a case of blaming Virginia for anything but rather a further wake up call for other Grand Lodges.

Just because it is reported that KKK rituals might be similar to Masonic rituals does not make them part of Freemasonry. The Boy Scout’s Order of the Arrow is very Masonic in its ritual, but it does not make them Masonic, the Eagles, Lions, Elks, Rotary and such are charitable in their pursuits, but this does not make them Masonic. Mormon Temples are design as a Masonic Lodge, but that does not make them Masonic. Groups such as these and many more are truly but shadows of our ancient fraternity but this does not make them Masonic.
Sorry Brother, but the examples given are not the actions of a conspiracy of the KKK infiltrating Freemasonry, but are the actions of individuals or groups of individuals who lives their lives believing that bigotry is socially acceptable.
Yes, such hatreds are something that we as Masons should take due notices thereof and aid a reformation, but to justify this as KKK infiltration is not only misleading, it also obscures the true nature of the problem.
